I'm 5'4" and the dramatic slit was almost non-existent on me. Unless you are as tall as the model, don't worry about work appropriateness... It is form fitting, but completely fine.

An elegant and special dress - stood out in a sea of other black dresses
The fit was quite comfortable, however be aware that the collar is very high in the back. I wore my hair up and it caught on the hook and eye closure repeatedly. A minor annoyance, but otherwise I loved this and would rent it again.
