40 was too tight for me. It fit but was hard to move, so I ended up wearing another dress. I'm usually a 0 or XS in dresses as I have a smaller rib cage, bust and waist. My lower body is larger (2-4 b/c of larger butt/thighs), however. If you have a similar body type or have an athletic build I would definitely go for a size up. It is a beautiful dress though and I might order again in a 42, which I think would fit perfectly.

Its a slightly thick dress and is tight. In dresses I usually wear a XS, but S was perfect for this dress as it will likely hug you no matter what. It was comfortable and I could move well in it but it was a tiniest bit scratchy (from the gold seams). Overall, great dress, but if you are going to a summer wedding with no air conditioning, you might want a more breathable dress.
