10 Things We Love: Designer Edition!
Mon, 2012-02-06 17:50 | by Lara Crystal1 Peter Som
It’s fabulous when something you love gets super-sized! I already love Diptyque candles—but a recent discovery of their large sized ‘bougie’ Indoor/Outdoor candle is fabulous! Its huge scale (52 oz!) gives it drama and it has taken center stage on my coffee table. It also comes in my favorite scents—Baies and Feu de Bois. I have to say this really is the perfect gift—to give AND to get!

2 Dannijo
I love to travel and take photographs everywhere. Below if one of my favorite photos that I took last summer in Monaco, France. I blow some of my favorite photos up and find cool vintage frames to hang them in. They always remind me of places I have visited. - Jo

3 Sophie Theallet
I love Aedes de Venustas, the best fragrance boutique in NYC. They have the best independent brands available.
4 Narciso Rodriguez
I love FD Gallery because you can find the rarest treasures and gifts there.

5 Erin Fetherston
Horsey is a horse-shaped attachment designer by Korean designer Eungi Kim that you can put on your bike to make you feel like you're riding a grand stallion.

6 Tuleste Market
We love "Flying Overseas" by Theophilus London (who rocks Tuleste like no other), a must for your playlist to keep you daydreaming of far away places and warm beaches during the Winter.
7 Sachin + Babi
We loved War Horse! The emotional bond between the man and the horse made us both come home and cuddle up with Coco (our King Charles Spaniel).

8 Tibi
Designer Amy Smilovic loves this blog that features gorgeous art and lots of handmade projects!
9 Gemma Redux
I was recently in India and after some (very successful) gem shopping in Jaipur, I spent a few days relaxing on the lake in Udaipur - one of the most majestic places I have ever been and a great place to unwind and get inspired.

10 Gryphon
Designer Aimee Cho loves the hand-crocheted alpaca sea-life shadow box from Oeuf. It's a baby-friendly decor item that mimics the look of the gryphon showroom with a sense of humor and whimsy for her son's nursery.
Friday Fashion Fun: Rooney Mara's Super Bowl Outfit, Prabal Gurung Ads, and more!

Rooney Mara's Super Bowl Sunday Ensemble
WWD asked a few parisian designers to sketch a Super Bowl outfit for Rooney Mara, who comes from a long line of football fanatics. We particlarly enjoy this one by Clare Waight Keller from Chloe. What would you outfit Rooney in for the biggest sporting event of the year? See all of the sketches here! [WWD]

Prabal Gurung Spring Campaign
We just about fell out of our chairs when we laid our eyes on Prabal Gurung's Spring 2012 campaign. Victoria's Secret model and blonde bombshell Candice Swanepoel went dark for the designer and totally kills it in his graphic, cutout pieces from the collection. We can't wait to see what he shows for Fall 2012. [Lucky]

Cut25's First Boutique
Yigal Azrouel's contemporary line, Cut25, celebrated it's first boutique opening last night in SoHo. Head on over to 129 Grand Street for your daily dose of neon! [Racked]

Prabal Gurung's Sephora Uniforms
Bella Sugar posted a video of Prabal Gurung previewing his newly designed uniforms for Sephora, and they are anything but dull! We love the red accents and the cut is perfectly funtional and fashion forward. We can't wait to see these in action at Sephora! [Bella Sugar]

CFDA/Vogue's The Fashion Fund
The first episode of this six-part web series debuted on Hulu last night and we're excited to add it to our weekly must-watch list. The documentary goes behind the scenes of the most recent CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund competition and we love seeing the likes of Anna Wintour, Diane Von Furstenberg, Jenna Lyons, Andrew Rosen, and more in their element. [On the Runway]
Prada's "24 hr Museum"
Following the recently ubiquitous "pop-up" store trend, Prada opened a 24 hour museum in the Palais d'lena. It all seems very mysterious and futuristic; we love Fashionista's recap of the exhibit. [Fashionista]

Christian Siriano Wedding Collection
Christian Siriano is designing a collection of wedding dresses to be available exclusively at Nordstrom. This is the first of the gowns, and we adore the tiered ruffles and pleating around the bodice. The Project Runway alum's first shot at bridal looks like a success so far! [Glamour]

Miss Piggy on Project Runway
The muppet darling was a guest judge on Project Runway last night and we love the spunk that she brought to the panel. The Paris Vogue veteran was dressed to impress and gave those aspiring designers a taste of her mind. [Racked]

Rachel Roy on Risks
Rachel Roy is a guest blogger for Stylelist and we loved her latest entry so much we had to share it with you. The designer writes about how taking risks is so important in every aspect of life, and why you should not be afraid to fail. In her words, "failure is merely the step before success." Behind the Seams: Vera Wang
Thu, 2011-12-01 20:08 | by AnonymousVera Wang tells us her proudest moment as a designer, her inspiration for her latest collection and advice for aspiring designers. Read on to get all the dish from Vera!
Tell me about the latest Vera Wang Resort collection.
Resort 2012 is all about easy shapes with a definite emphasis on prints. Strong brights counterbalanced by gentle geometrics and dots.
How would you describe your own style?
Personal style for me is, first and foremost, about comfort. If you're not comfortable with who you are, I don't think you can really be stylish. And I think the women who are the most stylish, and the most glamorous, are usually women that are extremely honest with themselves, and feel comfortable being who they are...who they are in their skin, who they are as a human being. And I think that's what style is really about.
What was your proudest moment as a designer?
I have many proud moments as a designer, but one of them was winning the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year award in 2005... The fact that I actually won was such a shock. When I was nominated, I felt so honored, because it's your peers...Winning that award meant becoming part of fashion history.
If you could give advice to aspiring designers, what would it be?
The best advice I can give is to study it... School is a great place to start, but if that is not accessible to you then try learning it from the ground up: Xeroxing, folding stock in a store, selling - at least you will find out if you really love it by experiencing it first hand. If you already know your path and are fortunate enough to know yourself, the next best thing is to work for a designer, publicist, or publication you truly admire. That way you can learn how multi-faceted the fashion world really is and how each business has its own specific DNA and business model.
Regardless of your passion, most people only begin to truly appreciate their careers, and their lives, as they improve, and grow, and achieve their goals on their own! That is where true satisfaction and dignity lie for all of us. No one can ever take something away from you if you've earned it. That is the beauty of achievement!
Featured Designer: Roksanda Ilincic
Tue, 2011-11-08 14:58 | by AnonymousRoksanda Ilincic has had quite the year dressing everyone from Keira Knightly and Penelope Cruz to Kate Middleton and Michelle Obama. We love the simple, classic lines of her pieces that drape and tuck in all the right places. Her silhouettes are flattering on a multitude of body types and if it's good enough for royalty, it's good enough for us!

Her dresses are perfect for any formal event or wedding this fall and winter. The simple, elegant draping is timeless and will have you feeling comfortable and confident the whole night!
Behind the Bling: Dannijo
Sun, 2011-11-06 17:29 | by AnonymousWe go behing the bling with Floridian sisters Danielle and Jodi who are the masterminds behind the sophisticated yet edgy Dannijo line. They give us the dish on their proudest moment as designers, favorite fashion trends, and more!
Tell me about the Resort/Holiday collection.
The Resort/Holiday collection is one part Cleopatra, two parts Holly Golightly (Breakfast at Tiffany’s). It’s about bold statement pieces that will take any ensemble next level chic. The collection plays up our signature bib silhouettes in sparkling cosmic colors, oversized 20’s clip-on crystal studs, and Great Gatsby-esque cocktail rings.
What is something you dream of achieving but haven’t yet?
We’ve started chipping away at our main goal which is to empower and employ women in underdeveloped areas of the world to take part in creating DANNIJO. We’ve partnered with Indego Africa to work with women cooperatives in Rwanda. The Rwandan women currently make all of our DANNIJO pouches (which are individually signed by the artisan and features her photo). We’re in the process of giving the women larger projects that would broaden the scope of their work for DANNIJO.
Other goals of ours include having a flagship store in New York, expanding our product-line, and launching an offshoot of DANNIJO that caters to our younger demographic. One day we also hope to have the DANNIJO Show, inspired by our favorite 90s show, House of Style.
How would you describe your own style?
Danielle: My style is sort of bohemian, rock-and-roll influenced. I love quirky fashion, mixing and matching pattern and color and all things tomboy. I also tend towards dressing comfortably, so if I’m wearing something really girly I’ll most likely pair it with high top sneakers and a men’s watch or a worn-in bomber jacket. I’m such a mood-dresser and my style is constantly evolving, but overall my basic vibe doesn’t change.
Jodie: And I’m a bit more classic and tend to gravitate towards more tailored silhouettes. I always love a great fitting blazer. My wardrobe consists of colorful silk blouses, printed dresses, classic designer handbags and loads of vintage findings. I also have tons of leather and jeans – two things I never tire of.
What is your favorite fashion trend right now?
Danielle – High top sneakers, men’s watches and all things pleated and leather!
Jodie – plaid on plaid and color blocking
What was your proudest moment as a designer?
Landing Bergdorf Goodman as our first account was a big moment for us. It really gave us the confidence to build and grow our business. Being featured on the Today Show was another major milestone and gave cachet to the brand. Inc magazine recognized us at America's Coolest Young Entrepreneurs on their 30 Under 30 list which also really validated. DANNIJO as a solid business. Beyonce buying our necklace from Bergdorf Goodman was also a major milestone--she's a real style icon and the fact that she bought the necklace at retail really made a statement about the collection offering something new to the marketplace.
If you could give advice to aspiring designers, what would it be?
Start locally. We tested our designs on the local market (Jacksonville, FL where we grew up). It will help you develop your product and see what people like and don't like about it so you can tweak it accordingly. By taking baby steps, you'll be less overwhelmed and have a more focused approach to growing your business.
Stay organized because it will be difficult and overwhelming to catch-up later.
Find a partner or employee that you trust and that shares the same goals and passion as you. Not only is it fun to share the journey with someone, but it will lighten your load.
Be fearless, and don't be afraid of rejection or failure or else you'll never make it.
Be openminded. You never know who you're meeting or how they could help you or potentially collaborate with you. Meet as many people as you can and be social--it will grow your business faster than you ever imagined. There is nothing like the power of a social network.
Use the internet. Make a page on Facebook, Tumblr and Instagram, and start tweeting and following people on twitter that you admire. You’ll learn so much about your customer and the behind the scenes of the brands you love. Having a presence online is more important now than ever before.
Thursday Obsession: Proenza Schouler Pups
Thu, 2011-11-03 15:04 | by AnonymousMost of us are dog lovers at RTR, so needless to say we are obsessed with the adorable keychains Jack and Lazaro of Proenza Schouler created for their pups. The keychains are limited edition and are being sold on ProenzaSchouler.com for $135. While the price is pretty steep, we can't say we wouldn't dish it out if we owned a dog that looked like either of these cute canines!

Behind the Seams: Daniel Vosovic
Mon, 2011-10-10 10:23 | by AnonymousDaniel Vosovic may be most familiar to you from season 2 of Project Runway. We caught up with him to find out his favorite fashion trend, proudest moment as a designer, and more.

Tell me about the collection you are launching on Rent the Runway.
I’ve always been inspired by survivors – the concept of strong, intelligent women fighting for what they believe. After watching Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf (after years of goading by friends who knew I would love it) and consequently becoming obsessed with Elizabeth Taylor’s portrayal of the wickedly harsh, and seemingly strong, Martha, I began to think how a woman like that would fair in other scenarios. A trip out to Portland, OR to see some friends soon stoked my creativity and the concept of her in a camping trip gone wrong soon germinated into a full-blown concept: forest fires, animal attacks, mudslides and more! The belief that this woman would never give up, never give-in to defeat despite the odds against her continue to be an on-going theme in much of my work. A short film we shot was the immediate precursor to the runway show, a glimpse into a fictional scenario that led immediately into the real-life incarnations walking the runway… it was just fantastic to see in-person.

What is something you dream of achieving but haven’t yet?
I know this may sound horribly weird, but at some point in my life (maybe before I’m 40) I want to be left on an island for two or three weeks, on my own, with just the most basic of necessities to see how I would fair. I’d be charged with building my own shelter, getting my own food and water, and more. I’ve been lucky enough to have only had a few moments of “fight or flight” experiences in my life and I’ve been proud of how I’ve reacted in all of them, but this test would really be just for me; I want to test my body and my intellect to see if I could do it. Granted, I would keep a cell phone as a just in case because I know my mother would kill me if she heard that I was planning to do this.
How would you describe your own style?
Casual minimalism.

What is your favorite fashion trend right now?
Well, as I just said, I love “casual minimalism” so everyone’s current obsession with Celine is all good for me.
What was your proudest moment as a designer?
Having this 20-something girl come up to me in the middle of a dance floor years ago and telling me that she had bought one of my coats. I was hot and sweaty (and looking terribly un-chic) but I still remember how earnest she was when telling me that it was her absolute favorite piece of clothing she had ever owned, and that she was really proud of me for following my dream.
That’s also one of my favorite “living in NYC” stories…

If you could give advice to aspiring designers, what would it be?
After years of being asked this question I decided to write a book to help with the answers. It’s so difficult to give just a sound bite, but since this is not the time, I’ll simply say to build the strongest, deepest support group around you that you can. Have it be filled with people who love and support you, but will also knock you around when you need it. My immediate and extended teams have already done so much for me, I don’t know how I will ever repay them.
