10 Things We Love 10.31.11
Mon, 2011-10-31 17:31 | by Anonymous
1 Halloween at RTR
We love seeing the creative costumes that RTR staffers put together. Some of our favorites this year were Blaire as a lion, Lauren channeling Minnie Mouse, and Sam as piglet.

2 Ashley's Wedding
Our Creative Director Ashley got married this weekend and looked absolutely stunning. Many of her guests rocked RTR and the dresses were perfect for a gorgeous fall wedding. Congratulations, Ashley and Doug!

3 Glitter Holiday Pumps
Brooke picked up a pair of these glittery Kate Spade pumps over the weekend to wear with all of her holiday dresses. We are obsessed with the multi-colored glitter that goes with everything and the pointy toe keeps it classic. We swear, Kate Spade can do no wrong!
4 All in the Family
Katy attended her sister's baby shower this weekend and her family all wore RTR.
Her mom wore the Tibi Babbet Lace Shift Dress, her sister wore the Mark and James by Badgley Mischka Draped Dream Dress with the Dannijo Omala Necklace, and she wore the Anna Sui Creme Brulee Scoop Dress with Lee Angel Solange Gold Chandelier Earrings. They look absolutely gorgeous and baby shower-perfect!
5 Pixar-Inspired Costumes
Pixar gave the office some costume inspiration this year: Tess handmade a Wall-e costume for her son and Tim was the house from Up.

6 Pumpkin Carving
Tiffany put her creative skills to use this weekend and carved a Hello Kitty themed pumpkin. She definitely wins the office award for cutest pumpkin!

7 Style.com/Print
We can't wait to pick up Style.com's first print magazine, aptly named Style.com/Print. This issue focuses on the Spring 2012 collections with exclusive features from designers, behind the scenes, and the best moments from New York to Paris.

8 Keeping Warm
Mallory had to break out these warm fur earmuffs to combat the cold winter storm we had in NYC on Saturday!

9 Snack Taverna
Katie loves this friendly little Taverna in the West Village. Conveniently located on her walk to work, their cappuccinos have become an essential part of her morning routine.

10 Rocco's Food Truck
Celeb chef Rocco Dispirito's new food truck was parked outside of our offices today, and we love the new lunchtime option. The truck offers healthy versions of our favorite comfort foods: mama's meatballs, enchiladas, and brownie cupcakes all under 350 calories!

Style Awards: Teal Beauty
Fri, 2011-10-28 16:28 | by AnonymousCongrats to this week's Style Awards winner, Lynsey! She is 6 months pregnant and had a wedding to go, so she rented this Mark & James by Badgley Mishka Teal Draped dress to keep it glamorous. Lancome Custom Runway Look
Fri, 2011-10-28 10:11 | by AnonymousNow that Lancome is offering complimentary makeup application at four of their NYC counters for RTR members, Alissa and I decided to try it out and made an appointment at the Bloomingdales Soho location. The look she was going for was a natural, classic one with a subtle smokey eye. Our Lancome Makeup Artist, BJ, knew exactly how to achieve it.
Face
To start off, he used the Absolue Premium Lotion which is perfect for more mature skin and works wonders for maintaining that dewy, hydrated look. He then applied Renergie Lift Makeup for seamless coverage, which has an incredibly silky texture and blended into Alissa's skin magically. For blush he used Blush Subtil in Miel Glace on the apples of her cheeks and blended with smooth storkes.
Eyes
To prime the eyes for shadow, BJ used Lancome's Aquatique Waterproof Eyecolour Base that can double as under eye concealer. He also used Teint Miracle Instant Retouch Pen under the eyes to smooth and seamlessly blend with the rest of her complexion. For all over eye color, he used Sensational Effects Eye Shadow in Click and more concentrated in the crease. To create the smokey look, he used a smaller eyeliner brush and lined her lower eye line with the same color. To make the eyes pop, he highlighted the inner eye with Sensational Effects Eye Shadow in Style Section Metallic. For mascara, he used Lancome Hypnose to give the lashes a full body fringe.
Lips
For the lips, BJ wanted to keep them simple so that most of the attention was kept on Alissa's eyes. He used Absolu Rouge lip color in a beautiful pink based gold called Rich Cashmere to bring out the natural color of her lips. For the finish touch, he applied Juicy Tubes lip gloss in Pink Horizon.

Lancome offers complimentary makeup application for Rent the Runway customers and members in New York City! Call any of the four counters below to book your appointment.

Thursday Obsession: Mary Katrantzou for Topshop
Thu, 2011-10-27 15:52 | by AnonymousWhen Mary Katrantzou showed her Spring 2012 Collection at London Fashion Week one thing was for sure: crazy prints were here to stay. We are absolutely in love with the whimsical birds, fish, bows, and prints that make up her gorgeous pieces. When we heard the news that she was creating a collection for Topshop, we were anxious to see if it would be influenced by her spring line. She tweeted a sneak peak earlier today and it looks like our dreams will be realized in the near future!

Style Spotlight: Beyonce
Wed, 2011-10-26 12:15 | by AnonymousWhen it comes to style, Sasha Fierce always brings her A-game. Now that she is preggers we can't wait to see how her style evolves. Check out some of B's best looks below and take a style cue from her for your next event.
This ravenous red looks stunning on Beyonce, and the one shoulder neckline is a great way to switch it up. We love this silk satin Nanette Lepore dress that flatters in all the right places.
Whip your hair back and forth in a sequin mini like B. This gold Tracy Reese shift is the perfect party frock for a bachelorette, girls night out, or holiday party.
Who can forget when Beyonce announced her pregnancy at this year's MTV VMAs? She wore this sleek Lanvin number that showed off her glow and enhanced her neckline. For an easy fit and instant glam, sport this Mark & James by Badgley Mischka frock.
Work this body conscious Herve Leger dress to get Beyonce's bright blue look. We love how she kept her makeup simple and used her hair to complement the va-va-voom dress.
Girl's Night in South Beach
Tue, 2011-10-25 15:33 | by AnonymousNo matter the season, women flock to Miami Beach to revel in the South Florida sun and mix and mingle with the jet setting elite. Our Creative Director Ashley recently had her bachelorette party there and inspired us to pick the top three places to go to ensure a great girls night out in South Beach.
1 STK
Hailing as the sexiest steakhouse in South Beach, exquisite eatery STK is a perfect spot to start the evening, where a celebrity chef spices up the experience with tantalizing entrées and delectable desserts. The sleek, bi-level space offers a state-of-the-art DJ lounge, catwalk and private dining areas overlooking the bustling venue.

2 The Rooftop at Gansevoort Miami Beach
Ascend 18 stories above Miami and enjoy cocktails on The Rooftop at Gansevoort Miami Beach, where the outdoor bar and lounge offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean, and the bartenders shake up playful drinks beneath swaying palm trees.

3 Night Life
After dark the red carpet rolls out and beyond the velvet ropes lay the hot spots that South Beach is best known for. We recommend heading to the legendary Mansion Nightclub, star-studded Nikki Beach Club or the newly re-opened Amnesia, which first washed up on the shores of Miami Beach in 1993.

Rent the Runway members get an exclusive discount of 25% off best available rates at Gansevoort Miami Beach by using the rate code GRTR when booking a room.
Tuesday Tip: Holiday Events
Tue, 2011-10-25 15:14 | by AnonymousWe all have a plethora of events this holiday season, so why not check one thing off that long to-do list and plan your party attire!
Spice it up for a dinner party with friends or family with this stunning Tibi dress. The red pattern and full skirt will have you feeling confident and in the holiday spirit. Pair with classic earrings and a bold cuff to round out your holiday chic ensemble.
For casual cocktails with friends, mix and match holiday colors for a standout effect. We love this one shouldered Milly dress paired with Dannijo jewels and a Judith Leiber clutch.
For your annual office holiday party, keep your main ensemble neutral and opt for a pop of color from your accessories. This sophisticated Christian Cota frock will have you feeling confident and fashion forward. Mix with Dannijo earrings and a purple snakeskin DVF clutch to complete the look.
For that formal affair that you've had on the calendar for a while, go for classic chic. In this David Meister gown you'll be the best dressed in room. Glam it up with a sparkly bangle and sleek Judith Leiber clutch.

Wed, 2011-10-19 16:01 | by AnonymousWe love Eva Mendes' cool, sophisticated style and she always seems to emit a glow whether on the red carpet or in jeans and a t-shirt. We loved her opposite Will Smith in Hitch but have to admit we are loving her even more alongside Ryan Gosling. Check out some of her best looks below and get her sultry style!
Eva's skin tone and hair color are perfect with this honey hued dress. We love her soft waves and she accessorizes with a neutral clutch and bangle. Get her easy on the eyes look with this gorgeous Milly dress - perfect for any occasion this season.
Essential for the holidays, multicolored sequins can instantly glamify any look. Go simple on hair and accessories to keep the attention on the flashy frock. This Mark & James by Badgley Mischka Sheath will have you turning heads and taking names.
Go simple but sexy like Eva in this black one shouldered Carlos Miele dress. Her red lips add the perfect pop of color and her Mad Men-esque hair style complements the angular neckline.
Sequins and prints are very in - so why not combine them! Eva sports this playful one shouldered frock to the MTV Video Music Awards and we love this Trina Turk shift.

Kate Spade Spring 2012

Prada Bears
Prada's latest gift book includes a collection of "tricks" as they are calling them - or more literally tricked-out bears. The bears are clothed in rockstar-esque dreads and accessories and even have pretty great names. There are sure to be the ultimate accessory and gift this holiday season. [Fashionista]

Celebrity Chic: Lady in Red
Fri, 2011-10-14 12:21 | by AnonymousThe Duchess of Cambridge looked red hot in this Beulah London gown at the 100 Women in Hedge Funds Gala in London last night. This inspired us to put together some of our favorite Kate-approved red dresses and complementing accessories to wear this Fall and Winter. To quote Bill Blass, "When in doubt, wear red!"

This Carlos Miele gown is a classic and the draping is flattering on many body types. Pair with Janis Savitt earrings for instant glamour and class.
We can totally see Kate sporting this elegant Roksanda Ilincic gown to any black tie event. The neckline is gorgeous, so pair with a fun pair of earrings or this striking Kenneth Jay Lane bracelet.
This Halston Heritage gown is sure to be a hit at any formal event. Light up the room by pairing the one-shouldered number with statement Erickson Beamon earrings.
Runway Beauty with Lancome
Thu, 2011-10-13 17:51 | by AnonymousEach season we look forward to the runway beauty looks almost as much as the ensembles. We got the scoop from Lancome Artistic Director for Makeup Aaron de Mey on his look for L'wren Scott Spring 2012 runway. For the show, he wanted to create a super bronzed complexion with chocolate eyes and soft brown lips. For the eyes, he used brown liner and mixed two brown shadows to create a smoky, bronzed look. To make the eyes pop, he added shimmer gold shadow to the inner corner. A few coats of jet black mascara were applied to the lashes and gloss was dabbed on the lids to give the finishing touch. For the face, sweep bronzer across the cheeks, nose, and chin. To top it off, he used matte bronze lipstick for a soft, feminine finish.
We love this gold/bronzed look and you can get it by using some of our fav Lancome products. Lancome's Star Bronzer All Over Magic Bronzing Brush gives a gorgeous glow and fits perfectly in your purse or clutch so you can take it on the go. Another product we love is Lancome's Hypnose Custom Volume Mascara. It volumizes lashes and makes even the smallest ones look long and lush. Perfect for everyday wear with one coat, or apply multiple coats for nighttime.

Thursday Obsession: Super Bass Girls
Thu, 2011-10-13 16:15 | by AnonymousWe just cannot get over the video of Nicki Minaj surprising these two little girls on The Ellen Show. We were so impressed with their rendition of Super Bass on YouTube and clearly Nicki was too! We've designated Super Bass, or any of Nicki's songs for that matter, as the ultimate karaoke feat (so many lyrics, so little time) and can't believe these little ladies picked up the lyrics in just two days.
Style Spotlight: Sarah Jessica Parker
Wed, 2011-10-12 17:21 | by AnonymousSarah Jessica Parker is undoubtedly a major fashion icon and her signature "Carrie" looks will be mimiced by fashionistas for years to come. We love how her style has evovled as she has tackled motherhood and moved on to bigger silver screen roles. Most recently in I Don't Know How She Does It, she explores a more conservative, corporate wardrabe without sacrificing her signature fashion forward style. As always though, SJP turns it out on the red carpet. See three of our fav looks below to get her it-girl style!
SJP can brighten up any room in this navy sequin mini, and we love this similar sassy number by Gryphon. You can sport this look with or without tights, and even though the dress is a darker blue it looks super chic with black pumps.
This strappless hot pink dress looks super feminine and sexy on her small frame, and she accessorizes with a simple but blingey necklace. We just got in this Matthew Williamson dress that is really fun and a very flattering fit.
This dress needs no explanation - the signature Carrie Bradshaw look! Halston is one of her go-to's and this white number is classic. Easily dressed down or dressed up, this dress is very functional and versatile.
Tuesday Tip: Fall Weddings
Tue, 2011-10-11 17:31 | by AnonymousThe Fall weather in NYC has officially set in (with the exception of the Indian Summer this past weekend) and many of us have weddings to attend. We pulled together some looks that are both occasion and season appropriate. Go with an interesting neckline like this Catherine Malandrino cranberry dress, or keep it simple and structured with Chris Benz. If you're more of the body-con type, work this Preen number or a red silky dress from Peter Soronen.

4 Apple Picking
Lauren went hiking and apple picking this weekend in Warwick, NY and despite the warm weather this Fall activity was a perfect way to spend the weekend!
.jpg)
5 Florence + The Machine
Megan loves the new Florence + The Machine single "Shake it Out". The uber talented group switches up their style with a new tone and the video is pretty amazing too.
6 Madeline Weinrib Rugs
After missing the gun on the One King's Lane sale last week, Jenn spent 4 hours perusing through the Madeline Weinrib store-within-a-store at ABC Carpet and Home. She is probably going with the one below for her new apartment with her boyfriend - it combines each of their styles: classic and fun!

7 Max Restaurant
Becky loves the Italian food and well priced pasta dishes at Max Restaurant in the East Village. We recommend the rigatoni with eggplant and mozzarella...yum!

8 Summer Weather in October
The 80+ degree weather this weekend gave us one last warm weather hurrah before the cold really starts to sink in. Katie took the opportunity to get in one last summer activity - homemade sangria and rooftop lounging.
9 Beyonce Countdown Video
We can't stop watching Beyonce's Countdown video. The art direction and editing is superb and so is B - as always!
10 Imperial No. Nine
Alissa sported one of our newest Proenza Schouler dresses to a dinner at Imperial No. Nine. The gorgeous decor and tasty menu made for a memorable night, and post dinner she headed to Double Seven, a cool new lounge in the Meatpacking District.

Behind the Seams: Daniel Vosovic
Mon, 2011-10-10 10:23 | by AnonymousDaniel Vosovic may be most familiar to you from season 2 of Project Runway. We caught up with him to find out his favorite fashion trend, proudest moment as a designer, and more.

Tell me about the collection you are launching on Rent the Runway.
I’ve always been inspired by survivors – the concept of strong, intelligent women fighting for what they believe. After watching Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf (after years of goading by friends who knew I would love it) and consequently becoming obsessed with Elizabeth Taylor’s portrayal of the wickedly harsh, and seemingly strong, Martha, I began to think how a woman like that would fair in other scenarios. A trip out to Portland, OR to see some friends soon stoked my creativity and the concept of her in a camping trip gone wrong soon germinated into a full-blown concept: forest fires, animal attacks, mudslides and more! The belief that this woman would never give up, never give-in to defeat despite the odds against her continue to be an on-going theme in much of my work. A short film we shot was the immediate precursor to the runway show, a glimpse into a fictional scenario that led immediately into the real-life incarnations walking the runway… it was just fantastic to see in-person.

What is something you dream of achieving but haven’t yet?
I know this may sound horribly weird, but at some point in my life (maybe before I’m 40) I want to be left on an island for two or three weeks, on my own, with just the most basic of necessities to see how I would fair. I’d be charged with building my own shelter, getting my own food and water, and more. I’ve been lucky enough to have only had a few moments of “fight or flight” experiences in my life and I’ve been proud of how I’ve reacted in all of them, but this test would really be just for me; I want to test my body and my intellect to see if I could do it. Granted, I would keep a cell phone as a just in case because I know my mother would kill me if she heard that I was planning to do this.
How would you describe your own style?
Casual minimalism.

What is your favorite fashion trend right now?
Well, as I just said, I love “casual minimalism” so everyone’s current obsession with Celine is all good for me.
What was your proudest moment as a designer?
Having this 20-something girl come up to me in the middle of a dance floor years ago and telling me that she had bought one of my coats. I was hot and sweaty (and looking terribly un-chic) but I still remember how earnest she was when telling me that it was her absolute favorite piece of clothing she had ever owned, and that she was really proud of me for following my dream.
That’s also one of my favorite “living in NYC” stories…

If you could give advice to aspiring designers, what would it be?
After years of being asked this question I decided to write a book to help with the answers. It’s so difficult to give just a sound bite, but since this is not the time, I’ll simply say to build the strongest, deepest support group around you that you can. Have it be filled with people who love and support you, but will also knock you around when you need it. My immediate and extended teams have already done so much for me, I don’t know how I will ever repay them.
Style Awards: Pretty in Poppy
Fri, 2011-10-07 14:47 | by AnonymousCongratulations to this week's style awards winner, Katie! She looks picture perfect in this Thread Social Poppy Sweetheart dress and we love how she accessorized with bangles, gold jewelry, and peep toe pumps.

Wu's color palette for his collaboration with Target will be navy, red, beige and yellow. We can't wait to see the lookbook! [WWD]

Chanel Nail Colors
Each season we await the Chanel nail color palette and this collection is one of our favorites yet. They are aptly named April, May, and June, and we can bet people will be sporting each color during its designated month. [Fashionista]

Celebrity Chic: Perfect in Proenza
Thu, 2011-10-06 19:14 | by AnonymousWe are totally bananas over Proenza Schouler's Fall 2011 collection, and it looks like the celebs are too!
Rachel Blison dons the Dakota Tribal print dress on the cover of InStyle Makeover and looks absolutely stunning. Her simple waves and and nail color are perfect complements to the beautifully printed dress. We love the mix of jewel tone colors and this look is perfect for any date, cocktail party, or formal event this Fall and Winter.
Marisa Tomei looks premiere perfect in this Wild Wild West Dress. We love how she went simple on the accessories and her tan makes the oranges and yellows in the dress pop. Prints are a great way to experiment this season and you can't go wrong with a Proenza Schouler creation!
Thursday Obsession: Barbie in Designer Duds
Thu, 2011-10-06 15:30 | by AnonymousBarbie is one one of the most notable fashion icons of the century, who wouldn't want to dress her? A few of our fav CFDA designers got to it and dressed this fashion maven in their threads. The collectables are being auctioned off to benefit the CFDA's educational scholarship program. Which design would you wear: Alexis Bittar, Alice + Olivia, or Tracy Reese?

Style Spotlight: Zoe Saldana
Wed, 2011-10-05 15:11 | by AnonymousZoe Saldana first caught our eye as a beautiful but headstrong ballerina in Center Stage. She has come a long way since, and with blockbusters like Avatar and Star Trek her style has also transcended some of her fellow silver screen stars. Her athletic yet petite frame gives her the freedom to try out different cuts and styles, and we love how often she experiements. Check out some of our favorite looks below, and take a style note from one of Hollywood's hottest actresses!
Zoe works this slimming deep-V dress that gives her structure and accentuates her athletic frame. Get her look with this similarly constructed Carlos Miele gown.
Cutouts are all over the runway and we love how this dress shows a subtle but sexy way of staying on trend. Get Zoe's dress from Black Halo for a night out on the town this Winter or Fall.
Red is a great color on Zoe, and we love this fun, flirty frock. The lace pleats on the hemline keep it feminine and playful, and the belted waist gives her some curves. Get her look with this pintuck Gryphon dress for a romantic night out or cocktail party.
This shift dress gives Zoe the ultimate sophisticated look and the metallic tweed fabric makes it appropriate for any season. Christian Siriano makes a fantastically elegant silver metallic tweed sheath that will give you Zoe's refined style.
Tuesday Tip: Getting the Retro Look
Tue, 2011-10-04 16:14 | by AnonymousConservative is making a comeback, and with Mad Men and Pan Am on our minds (and DVR's) we can't help but want to glam it up like Betty Draper or jetsetting Colette.
Nina Ricci and Moschino are the experts in timeless sophistication, and these retrospective looks will exude the perfect amount of class and refined elegance. Pair with a simple updo or loose waves and you're good to go. We've been seeing these conservative hemlines all over the runway and love these looks for any formal event or cocktail party this Fall. They also work well for Fall and Winter weddings.
These festive frocks from Opening Ceremony, Nina Ricci, and Peter Soronen are a perfect way to go retro for a less formal event. Be the best dressed in the room at any birthday party, shower, or date. Pair with some fun jewelry and a statement clutch to glam up the complete look.

1 RTR in Milan
Derek and Anushka have been hopping around Milan for the past few days and making trips to all of the designer showrooms. Tune in for a full recap of their trip next week!

2 The Rub
This monthly hip-hop party at Southpaw in Park Slope was the best dance party Chondita has been to all year. Great music, a fun flannel-clad crowd, chill door scene and non-stop awesome music!!

3 Madison Square Park Fall Food Festival
Ashley went to the Madison Square Park Fall Food Festival and discovered some of the best NYC has to offer: Momofuko Crack Pie, Nunu Chocolates salt caramel squares, and The Bee Sting pizza from Roberta's.

4 College Fest in Boston
The RTR college team traveled to Boston this weekend for College Fest where over 15,000 students attended. They represented in style and had a great time!
5 Memphis
Jenny was in Memphis for the weekend and had a Cinderella moment. She also stopped by Elvis Presley's Graceland and snapped a pic with the King of Rock n Roll himself.

6 NYC Bucket List
In preparation for his departure for California, Chris has created a Bucket List for things he wants to do in NYC before he leaves. We love all the places on the list and may just have to participate! Check it out.
7 Fleiss and Wollensky
Smith & Wollensky is renaming their restaurant every day in October after a loyal customer, and Jenny's family was picked! We have to admit Fleiss & Wollensky has a pretty good ring to it.

8 French Bulldogs
Blaire is getting a French Bulldog in a few weeks and we can hardly wait to meet our newly designated RTR Mascot. Her name is Moss and she loves to sunbathe!

9 Pixar Stamps
We still love a good handwritten snail mail note, and these pixar stamps are pretty much the cutest.
10 10 Corso Como
Derek and Anushka absolutely love store in Milan that is celebrating their 20th anniversary. The store is a combination al fresco restaurant, mens and womes designer apparel, home itmes, a book store, and an art gallery with a rooftop lounge! Talk about a visual feast.
