I have been loving the dresses I've rented from Rent the Runway in the past and wanted to share the fabulously fashionable experience with one of my best friends for her 30th birthday.  For a while RTR was my little secret, but friends who care will definitely share!

Monica and I met attending college in Colorado together and have been friends for over 10 years. It’s no surprise that when we both moved to NY we would be sharing all of New York experiences together. When it was time to answer the big birthday question- What am I going to wear? - I had to get her to use RTR.

I chose both of our dresses (and Monica's request) for dinner and drinks to celebrate the festive occasion.  I wore the Gryphon Metal Chain Striped Dress and paired it with nude python heels and gold bangles and earrings for a laid-back yet stylish look for a night on the town.  I loved my dress and received compliments all night.

For the birthday girl, I thought something a little more sparkly and fun that said "Hey, it's my birthday!" would be appropriate.  I chose the Badgley Mischka Fifth Avenue Showstopper Dress and she wore her favorite white kitten heels and her always gorgeous smile.  Monica looked amazing and felt special in her fabulous dress as we hit up all our favorite places in Tribeca with the girls into the wee hours of the morning.  It was a great night and super-fun way to celebrate such a big birthday.

Now I can say that we can't wait for the next excuse to Rent the Runway!

Earth Day is today and RTR’s been revving up for it all week. We’ve got fresh flowers in our office, Brita filters in lieu of bottled water, windows open and A/C off and a new recycling initiative. How’s that for a first step?

Rent the Runway has always been eco-conscious and there is no reason that you can’t get your fashion fix while being green. The resources, textiles, energy and time put into making one dress is a complete waste if it sits in your closet after one wear. With RTR, you can borrow instead of wasting and join in on the “fashion recycling” we all love.

As you know, dry cleaning is part of the RTR process and it was important for us to choose a dry cleaner who shared our vision. All of our dresses are dry cleaned at Slate, an eco-friendly, organic facility and as we grow, we plan to grow green.

I’m from CA, where bringing your own reusable bags to the grocery store is the norm and I’ve continued to do so in the big city. I’ll definitely be arriving in eco-fashion!

Reducing the number of times you dry clean your clothing is not only cost effective and better for the garments but reduces the number of harsh dry cleaning chemicals that are used daily. Take one dress from day to night and save the world and on your dry cleaning bill!

I suggested the Gypsy Glam Dress with a cute pair of black gladiator sandals and a denim jacket during the day to one of my besties on the West Coast. All she needs to do is lose the jean jacket and switch the gladiator sandals to a pair of pumps for the Coachella-esque rooftop party she’s attending the same day. She also added the Kara Ross Rarr Clutch for some fun animal print pattern mixing from day to night!

Some of us have been long overdue for a nice time with just the girls and most of us are anxiously awaiting the premier of “Something Borrowed.” You see where this is going. Our best bet for this week? Make sure you send the save the date for May 6^th, for you and your friends to attend the movie's opening night!

The Spare Room at one of LA’s favorites, The Hollywood Roosevelt, is the place to head after the flick. With prohibition style drinks and two vintage custom made bowling lanes, everyone in your party will enjoy themselves.

We’ve all followed her through the years. From G.I. Jane to Bruce Willis then Ashton Kutcher, she never fails to get our attention. This week’s Style Spotlight is on Demi Moore and her clean cut style. No matter the occasion she manages to get the proportions just right… and Ashton in a matching ensemble. That’s a fashion statement we love. What’s your favorite Demi look?

A little peep of shine can spruce up any outfit- Easter or not. These are our favorite ways to add that little something to an outfit. What would you add? Note- these Peeps don't count!

Hues of Easter

You can always rely on a pastel colored dress to have you covered for your Easter festivities. Yellow, blue or a mix of a few pastels gets us going.

This weekend RTR hosted its first ever Runway Rep College Capstone weekend in NYC. Twenty Runway Reps flew in from around the country representing schools such as Harvard, NYU, University of Georgia, University of California, Roger Williams, Case Western, University of Colorado, Penn State, and many others. The weekend was jam packed with fun filled fashion activities for the girls.

Our Runway Reps are the face of RTR on Campus. They market RTR on their campuses and introduce other college girls to the Cinderella experience at a young age. These young women build Facebook pages, blogs, hold fashion shows and other events on campus that encourage girls to rent the runway and fall in love with designer brands.          

We wanted to reward the Runway Reps for all of their hard work this year on campus and put together activities that gave them the opportunity to learn about the fashion industry and more about behind the scenes at RTR. Some highlights from the day included a designer session with Christian Siriano, a Badgley Mischka brand presentation held by Heather Cloud, a Spring fashion preview led by our very own fashion team, a tour of our warehouse and dinner in the Meatpacking district. 

Part of the day involved brainstorming sessions where the Runway Reps were able to share best practices with each other and work on generating new ideas to bring back with them to their respective campuses.

We currently have 150 Runway Reps on over 50 campuses and are looking to expand this to over 150 schools in the next year. Thanks to all of the Runway Reps that were able to join us this weekend. It was truly an amazing experience! --Becky

Rachel Roy & Amar’e Stoudemire

Amar’e Stoudemire was seen all over the tents during New York Fashion Week in February, but he’s taking his fashion even more seriously. Stoudemire and Rachel Roy have teamed up to create a line for Macy’s under the Rachel Rachel Roy label. The line will be focused on sporty separates and will be priced from $45 to $250. Their inspiration? What super models Gisele and Kate Moss wear to when they watch sports… naturally. [NBC]

John Galliano was officially fired from John Galliano today. The outcome of a series of anti-Semitic remarks resulted in his firing from Dior, but he was still head designer at his namesake label. After one month at an Arizona rehab, the 91% Dior owned John Galliano label fired John Galliano himself. Can you imagine how it would feel to not own your own name? [WWD]

This Dress Diary was brought to Rent the Runway by Allie Gradinger

As an intern at RTR, I see every aspect of Rent the Runway. From the witty banter that flies across the office, sneak peaks at what the buyers are thinking for next season, to Jenn and Jenny’s inspirational speeches. The all-encompassing experience has also given me the privilege of spending countless hours admiring the fabulous frocks in the upstairs warehouse all under careful watch of the fabulous operations team.

When I received the news I would have to pack my bags and attend my cousin David’s Bar Mitzvah in Jackson, Mississippi I knew exactly what I was going to wear. Forget my spring wish list- I had my eye on some RTR frocks!

For Friday night Shabbat, I wore the Milly Doll Lace Dress and paired it with ballet flats. This dress was the perfect length and segued from temple to dinner party seamlessly.

The Bar Mitzvah ceremony took place on Saturday morning, where I sported the Tibi High Tea Dress and black pumps. The dress was comfortable and easy to move around in, which is essential for this specific religious service as the congregation is frequently asked to rise and be seated.  With the luncheon following, I again was able to transition from morning to afternoon without a hitch.

Saturday Night was the big reception, where my cousin David was able to celebrate the completion of his Bar Mitzvah with 250 of his closest friends and relatives. Knowing full well I would be rocking out to oldies on the dance floor with my aunts (Electric Slide anyone?), joining in on the Hora (an Israeli circle dance), and experiencing southern cuisine (they really do fry everything!), I knew the only dress that would be able to keep up with me would be the Halston Be Mine Mini Dress paired with nude heels. The color is fun, the fit was great, and the tiered ruffles had me swishing across the dance floor.

Rent the Runway was the perfect go-to for my jam-packed weekend. For the first time I was simultaneously able to dress appropriately and fashionably to these types of events- a concept I thought was unachievable. My first trip to the South was unforgettable and just when I thought RTR couldn’t be any greater I was reminded on my flight home not once but twice (thanks to Glamour and Teen Vogue) just how special this company is! Mazel Tov!

Japan Relief

The CFDA has rallied some of fashion’s key players to raise more funds for Japan. Up for the taking is a week-long stay at Diane Von Furstenberg’s Harbour Island Beach House, lunch and a style consultation with Rachel Zoe, meet and greet with Anna Wintour at a Vogue magazine photo shoot and plenty more. DVF x Gap Kids?

We've gotten word that DVF is collaborating with Gap Kids to release a line for your little one. Gap had a tremendously successful run with Stella McCartney’s children’s line, so it doesn’t surprise us that they are looking for someone to succeed McCartney. Considering DVF launched maternity wear last week, this seems like the logical next step. Would you buy DVF x Gap Kids? We would be all over it! [Racked]

“Avant garde” is typically used to describe a person whose look is fashionable but in the eclectic and artsy kind of way. It is about a person who isn’t afraid to play with fashion and have fun, purposely being different.

While many of the avant garde enthusiasts who come to mind are donning this season's bright pink Prada fur scarves or Alexander Mc Queen armadillo shoes- think Lady Gaga and Anna Dello Russo- you too can embrace the avant garde without spending thousands. These are our best bets for a little something we like to call budget avant gardism. Add a feather in your hair or a runway -esque hat and red lip and you’re ready to go.

Typical days at Rent the Runway bring many opportunities for Cinderella experiences with fashion. One of my favorite rituals of the week is 5pm on a Friday when many an RTR lady can be found upstairs in our warehouse modeling dresses for her parties that weekend and getting the often too-honest feedback of the RTR family! So, I'm just a bit spoiled when it comes to dressing up! That said, last week I had my very own Cinderella moment with fashion. I was invited to the opening night of the de Young Museum’s “Balenciaga and Spain” exhibition in San Francisco and I knew I needed to wow with my fashion choice as Anna Wintour was hosting.

Before the event, Derek Guillemette, our head buyer, called some of my favorite designers and asked for special couture gowns - Bibhu Mohapatra, Prabal Gurung, Narciso Rodriguez and of course, Alberta Ferretti. About a dozen gowns floated into our office a moment's notice and I had a veritable fashion show in one of our conference rooms to determine which dress was "the one." I decided on a Grecian-inspired, slate-grey Alberta Ferretti gown - a go-to brand for special events.

Fast-forward to the exhibition - there were 120 breathtaking pieces, and the crowd was packed with fashion world elite and some of my favorite techie friends from Yelp, Google and Facebook. Attendees were dressed in gowns from Carolina Herrera, Oscar de la Renta, Rodarte, and of course Balenciaga. At my table was Gela Nash-Taylor and Pamela Skaist-Levy, the founders of Juicy Couture who were dripping in Lanvin’s runway collection. They were tons of fun and we talked about the new line they have coming out in July, which we at Rent the Runway are eagerly awaiting. I also had a great time chatting with Cameron, owner of Decades, the amazing vintage boutique.

Among the crowd was also Anna Wintour, Hamish Bowles, Gywneth Paltrow, and the Rodarte sisters – it was truly a special evening and I felt like fashion royalty. I hope that every time a Rent the Runway customer receives her dress in the mail she feels the same way.
