Sequins: Day or Night
Wed, 2010-09-29 17:20 | by Lara CrystalWondering how to add some sparkle while the sun’s still up? Here’s some of our tips to make sequins work at any hour. How do you prefer to wear your sequins? Let us know in the comments. --Lara
Rachel Roy’s Warrior Princess Dress
This dress offers a powerful sparkle statement with a modest silhouette – the perfect daytime sequin look when worn with tights, a chunky sweater, and a pair of boots.
See by Chloe Stella Fashion Dress
If you prefer your sequins with a bit more bronze, this dress is just right. Pair with a great ballet flat and some black tights for an effortless look.
Cara Accessories’ Black Swan Headband
A sequin headband is the perfect way to sparkle Blaire Waldorf style. Add to a simple LBD for a fresh, youthful look.
Gryphon’s Sequin Wrap Skirt
A sequin skirt with a longer length offers a stylish way to stand out. We like this best paired with a simple t-shirt and knee-high boots.
Badgley Mischka’s Screen Siren Gown
Just kidding! Unless you have a black tie party at noon, wear this stunning style only at night please.
Getting Schooled In Fashion
Mon, 2010-09-27 18:25 | by Lara CrystalI’m on the road for our second Rent the Runway college tour and this time I ‘m heading further south to UF, UGA, UA, and Vanderbilt. In preparation for my trip, I thought I’d share some scenes from our inaugural college tour that took Jenn, Jenny, me, and 200 of our hottest dresses to UNC, Duke, UVA, and SC. Our Runway Reps organized a variety of amazing events on campus - from trunk shows to fashion shows. Gaggles of gorgeous girls came out to try on new designers and book looks for game day (yes, dresses are de rigueur for football games), rush, date parties, formals, and all of their upcoming events. –Brooke

What’s a college girl to do when you’re not allowed fraternize with boys or go out for 4 nights during sorority recruitment? Throw the ultimate ladies only event: a Rent the Runway fashion show and trunk show offering up fall’s hottest trends on Carolina’s hottest women. Jenn, Jenny, and our UNC Runway Reps welcomed over 300 girls who came out for our soiree at the Franklin Hotel.

Here’s our bevy of beautiful models before and after the show. It’s true what they say: Carolina girls really are the best in the world.

Jenn had a blast at Christina Lewis' East Hampton wedding and after-party this weekend (first thing she loved!). But, she was even more surprised when she learned that the after-party DJ was engaged to DJ Kiss (who got her dancing the previous week at the USWeekly bash) - so essentially Jenn's two favorite DJs in the world are engaged! Fate it is! Look out for both of them at the Rent the Runway first anniversary party in November.
3 Mi Cocina in Dallas, Texas
Jenn and AJ went there last week for some classic TexMex.
4 Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps
So great to see a movie with NYC as the backdrop to the story - it’s like a character unto itself!

9 Heartbreaker (L'Arna Coeur)
Derek loved this hilarious film...who says the French have no sense of humor?

10 Television Returns!
Mad Men could only keep us happy for so long. Glee! Grey’s Anatomy! Dancing with the Stars! Yippee for something to do at home when it’s raining all week…

More from NYFW
Thu, 2010-09-16 12:05 | by Lara Crystal
It's been a crazy week and the whole team is exhausted! Running from one show to the next has definitely taken its toll. Here's a little photo diary of what we've been up to! --Lara
Jenn, Jenny, Derek, Anushka, and myself were beyond excited to see the Yigal Show. So we ran out of the office as fast as we could and headed up to the tents on Tuesday night. Unfortunately, when we got there, we looked at the tickets and noticed one little problem - the show wasn't at the tents! We hopped in a cab downtown and crossed our fingers that the show would start late. To our great disappointment, the doors had closed. Here's all of us with our sad faces on when we realized we'd missed the show.

Next, we headed back up to Lincoln Center to catch Tibi in action.

Here's Jenn, Jenny, Derek, and Lauren in their front row seats!

Our last show Tuesday was Narciso Rodriguez, and we loved the beautiful minimalist statement. Here's a few images from the gorgeous show.

Finally it was Wednesday, and we arrived back in the tents in time to catch a sea of prints at Milly.

After our crazy two days, it was definitely time for a party! So off we went to US Weekly's Most Stylish New Yorkers Party. We spotted Adrien Grenier, Mary J. Blige, Katie Couric, and even snapped a pic with Bethenny.

RTR on ABC's Bachelor Pad
Wed, 2010-09-15 23:11 | by Lara Crystal
For ABC’s Bachelor Pad finale, contestant Gwen Gioia rented the runway with the help of her stylist Monika Suli. What did she choose for her final look? The Yigal Azrouel Very Violet Dress. According to Gwen, she loved the dress for the finale because of the “fit and color” , adding that “the embellishment on the waist was very beautiful and eye catching on top of being figure flattering.” We think she wore it well! - AJ

Busy Tuesday at the Tents

We're headed back shortly for what's sure to be a wonderful evening - Yigal Azrouel, Tibi, and Narciso Rodriguez - but wanted to share a few pics from the day. Enjoy! -- Lara

Monday at the Tents: Carlos Miele Spring/Summer 2011
Mon, 2010-09-13 14:21 | by Lara Crystal
For Spring 2011 Carlos Miele showed dress and separates in the hot non-color of the moment, white and layered in his trademark colorful prints and embellishments. My favorites were a printed yellow chiffon one shoulder gown, a flame red satin asymmetric chemise and the finale dress, a black rosette one shoulder gown shown without a slip, Galliano style. The best of part of the show though was the live music…Bebel Gilberto, a friend of Miele’s, sang an inspired version of Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall” during the runway show.
More updates to come…
--Derek

10 Things We Love This Week 9.13.10
Mon, 2010-09-13 09:15 | by Lara Crystal
1 Fashion Week at Lincoln Center
The tents are bigger, check in is faster, and while we're not loving everything that's heading down the runways, we've seen a lot of great looks for Spring.
2 Fashion's Night Out
The RTR team hit up Helmut Lang, DVF, Matthew Williamson, and more. Meatpacking was definitely the place to be with a fabulous block party where drinking champagne on the streets was de rigueur.

3 Gossip Girl
The new season debuts tonight and we can't wait. Keep your eyes peeled for an RTR cameo and check out our picks to get gossip girl style.

Another September…Another NYFW
Fri, 2010-09-10 15:00 | by Lara Crystal
Fashion week has started and there are some interesting changes this season. For one the shows have been moved from Bryant Park (which was great because it was near NYC’s garment district and all of my showroom appointments) to Lincoln Center and NYC’s Upper West Side. While the trek to get to shows from our West Village Office may be a little inconvenient, the more luxurious and bigger tents (courtyards to relax in between shows and a Starbucks station!) make up for it. I think the most surprising change though is the super high tech check-in procedure…simply scan the barcode on you invite email sent to your smartphone, and a receipt prints out for the security guards to scan. No more long lines to push through! So far I have been to the Project Runway show, Christian Siriano and BCBG and have loved each- Spring 2011 is going to be a great season!
We’ll be sending you updates and reviews throughout the week…enjoy Rent the Runway’s coverage of Spring 2011 Fashion week! --Derek

__________________________________________________________________________
If I had to pick one fashion crush, it would totally be Yigal Azrouel. Not only is he completely gorgeous, but my junior prom dress was from his first collection in 1998, which I bought at a great store around the corner from my apartment on the upper east side called Nellie M. (it has since vanished, a victim of the recession).
His clothes are to die for, and his fluid, feminine draping has given him the kind of staying power other designers dream of. Read on for his inspiration and learn why we are totally putting this amazing leather jacket on our "can't live without it this fall" list. --Lara

1. What inspired your Fall 2010 collection?
The FW10 collection was a fresh take on sportswear and tailoring inspired both by menswear and an architectural, minimal approach.
2. How did you go about designing the prints in this collection?
I always work with my team to find prints that feel modern, whether it’s inspired by a book, artwork, vintage scarves, African textiles made into artwork, really the inspiration can come from anywhere. From there we work on layout, scale, and color palettes
3. Which part of the design process do you like the best?
Draping. When a new fabric that we ordered comes in, it’s a new experience every time. I can’t wait to break off a piece (yes, literally pull off a yard or two) and start to drape on a mannequin.

4. How is the Yigal Azrouel brand growing in 2010 (2011)?
It’s been a busy year for me. For Fall ’10 I expanded my handbag assortment and scarves, and will have my first shoe collection for Spring ’11, which has been something I have been wanting to do for years. I also launched a contemporary brand called Cut25 which is hitting stores now.
5. If you could sit front row at a fashion show for any designer in history, who would it be and why?
Can I pick one from every decade? I think early YSL is something I would have liked to have experienced. I was at a Christian Dior couture show, under Gianfranco Ferre, in the mid-90’s and it was definitely an inspiring moment.
6. How do you celebrate finishing a collection?
I like to be surrounded by the people that helped make it happen, my team. It really takes so much energy and dedication from a lot of people to make a collection happen. Then get out of town to clear my head since a new collection is always right around the corner. Not sure where I will be going after the NY shows in September but I hope it involves surfing.
7. If a girl was going to purchase her first Yigal piece, what would you want it to be?
Definitely one of my signature washed leather jackets. The newest version is in cognac and is convertible into a jacket, vest and cropped bolero. There’s a lot of value because each shape looks cool.

Introducing Nina Ricci and Calvin Klein Collection!
Thu, 2010-09-02 20:17 | by Lara Crystal
Perhaps you've noticed that this week, RTR got just a little prettier. Maybe its the elegant American sportswear from Calvin Klein Collection or maybe its the feminine beauty embodied in the gorgeous Nina Ricci, but either way we can't stop staring at our beautiful new fall collections. We hope you like them as much as we do. Happy Labor Day weekend! -- Lara
P.S. Here's my favorites from the collections - what are yours?
CALVIN KLEIN COLLECTION - Simply fabulous. Did you sneak a peek at the back? Just a little pop of skin makes it the ultimate sexy LBD for fall. Retails for $1195 and rents for $150.
NINA RICCI - I have literally been asking Derek about this skirt every day since I first glimpsed it in his market photos. Now that it's here I can't stop staring. It's luxury high fashion in a gorgeous mini. Retails for $1700 and rents for $200.
Happy 9.02.10 Day!
Thu, 2010-09-02 16:02 | by Lara CrystalIt's September 2nd, 2010 and as far as we're concerned, it should be a national holiday. Donna Martin graduates!
To celebrate, we picked out some of our favorite styles for the California girl in all of us. Enjoy! -- Lara

Brenda wore a lot of black and since this model has bangs, this picture just screams Brenda Walsh. Plus, Dylan liked to keep her covered up in the high school years.
Kelly always looked casual and ready for the beach, so this Alice + Olivia frock would be perfect for her bohemian california style.
If Donna was around now, she would definitely be in a tight, fitted, Herve Leger mini.
