Merci New York: Styling Your Engagement Shoot
Fri, 2010-01-15 16:29 | by AnonymousBrought to Rent the Runway by Jacqueline Weppner, founder of MerciNewYork.com
Jacqueline Weppner owns and edits Merci New York, a Manhattan based bridal styling service and namesake online style guide for the busy city bride. We have partnered with Jacqueline to bring you the best styling advice for your bridal needs.
Whenever Merci New York plans an engagement session, the very first thing we do is learn about the couple. For example, who they are, what they like and what they dislike about the engagement sessions they see on blogs. This may sound obvious, but it's a very important step in making sure we create a shoot that speaks to the couple, their lives, and their love for each other.
When I met with Holly and Carlos to develop their e-session inspiration board, they shared that they love classic New York City spaces, Mad Men style (but don't want anything too vintage or inspired), dislike flowers (who would have known?!) and never find themselves in the subways, i.e. they don't want any of the "overdone" station or streetscape shots. Essentially, they wanted an engagement session that spoke to their chic, classic New York lifestyles. And so we delivered.
Rent the Runway was a perfect closet to pull looks from. Every bride to be wants to look amazing for the photos she will keep forever but there’s no need to spend lots of cash on getting the shot. For Holly's looks, I was drawn to the gold lurex accents in both the "day" and "night" outfits we crafted. Milly does an amazing job of injecting a bit of vintage, sixties style into their prints and silhouettes, so it was the perfect fit for Holly's love for the "Mad Men" look, as well as our need to keep the shoot current and not too costumed.
Day look: To keep Holly looking modern, we balanced the dainty lace on the Milly dress with Cara's Rocker Chain Necklace, another black chain for length, and AV Max's Glitzy Glamour cuff. Her look was finished with some very opaque tights and her own suede wedge booties.
Night look: The Kimono-Me Milly dress and Erickson Beamon ring were the perfect selections for her night look, not to mention the Badgley Mischka earrings that were so Mad Men-esque.
We decided to work with a palette of black and gold for both of her looks, so that the engagement session had consistency (and looked fabulous when finally placed in an album). I think that's something brides often forget: Outfit changes are fantastic (the more the better), but it's really imperative to make sure your outfits sit well with each other. Complimentary colors and fabrics juxtaposed with varying silhouettes, hair, make-up and accessories = absolute perfection.
Here are some of my favorite shots from the engagement shoot. All the best to Holly and Carlos!

Booking Your Wedding Photographer Tip Series
Fri, 2010-01-15 16:24 | by AnonymousBrought to Rent the Runway by Christian Oth
There are so many great options in wedding photography available now to couples, and it can be almost overwhelming to know how to find the best match. As a seasoned wedding photographer and studio owner, I’ve had a lot of experience working with couples to find a photographer and style that works best for them.
For the next couple of weeks, I will be sharing my best suggestions for booking your wedding photographer in Booking Your Wedding Photographer: Tips Series by Christian Oth. Following these tips will get you one step closer to getting great photographs that you’ll be able to cherish for years to come.
Week One Focus: Versatility
Is your photographer versatile? With weddings, one thing is for sure--things can change on the spot. Before each wedding, I try to pre-visualize many of the shots I will take that day. However, no matter how carefully planned they are, they tend to be dynamic and with certain unpredictable elements, so I try to get the images that I had planned but when situations change or I am inspired by a new idea, that then becomes the main focus. The best way to find out if your photographer is able to adapt to different situations is to look at several different wedding portfolios. Can they get good photographs in both bright sunlight and rainy weather? Can you recognize certain shots that are in-the-moment?
Have they photographed a wedding with similar elements as yours? If you are having a destination wedding on a beach, you will want to make sure that your photographer is experienced and comfortable shooting this type of wedding. Similarly, if you are having a winter wedding that takes place indoors, you should make sure that your photographer is skilled at capturing light in an interior venue.
